The
conference was well attended by not only members but non members also.
October 30th began at 2pm with a
speech by Cherie Booth QC. There was an exciting flurry of activity
before Miss Booth arrived by the security forces. Miss Booth had lunch
with NCA’s Officers and Board of Directors before making a wide ranging
speech about care providers and the human rights legislation.
Her
speech was followed by a series of workshops, nine in total covering a
wide range of subjects from nutrition to benefits, from person centred
care to environmentally friendly design of care homes.
In the
evening of the first day we held a Charity Fundraiser in aid of
Marie Curie Cancer Care,
Rosemere Cancer Foundation and
Bryn Melyn Group Foundation
which began with a drinks reception hosted by
Fireco, followed by a buffet
supper and then a fun quiz.
Was it
a coincidence that the winning table was hosted by NCA’s Chairman, Nadra
Ahmed OBE but …….. The table that won the booby prize was also hosted by
a long serving member of the Board of Directors!
Day 2
began with an address by the
Chairman, Nadra Ahmed OBE which was followed by the keynote speaker,
Ivan Lewis MP, Minister for Social Care.
One of
the most interesting speeches on the day was from Duncan Budd, Better
Regulation Executive from Department for Business, Enterprise and
Regulatory Reform,
The
final presentation of the day was about the Mental Capacity Act.
That
evening a dinner and dance was held. Dancing went on for most of the
night!
The
final day dawned and there were some weary people…… But the final
morning began with a
speech by
David Behan, Director General of Social Care in the Department of
Health closely followed by
David Walden and John Fraser from CSCI.
The
conference finished with a
speech by Sheila Scott OBE. She made a number of announcements in
her speech and we will be writing to you about them early in the New
Year.
